PM welcomes Ayushman Bharat rollout in Bengal

New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday welcomed the implementation of Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana in West Bengal, stating that people in the state would now benefit from the world’s largest healthcare scheme that provides affordable and quality medical treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed happiness over the rollout of the Ayushman Bharat healthcare scheme in West Bengal and said the initiative would significantly benefit the people of the state.

Sharing his views on social media platform X, the Prime Minister stated that the welfare of the people of West Bengal remained a priority and that the healthcare programme would ensure access to affordable and quality medical services.

In his message, Modi said the implementation of Ayushman Bharat in the state would allow residents to benefit from one of the world’s largest healthcare programmes. He also stated that the double-engine government would ensure smooth implementation of major Central welfare schemes in West Bengal.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came shortly after newly sworn-in West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari shared details regarding the decisions taken during the first Cabinet meeting held at Nabanna after assuming office on May 9. Adhikari described the first day of his administration as eventful and said the government had started converting its election promises into action through several major decisions aimed at improving governance and development in the state.

One of the key announcements made by the new state government was the implementation of Ayushman Bharat in West Bengal. The decision is expected to enable eligible residents to receive benefits under the Centre’s flagship health insurance programme.

Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana is implemented by the National Health Authority under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The scheme provides cashless hospitalisation coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per family every year for economically weaker and vulnerable sections of society requiring secondary and tertiary healthcare treatment.

Launched by the Central government in September 2018, the programme aims to improve healthcare access for poor and underprivileged families across the country. The scheme has been widely promoted as a major step toward strengthening India’s public healthcare system and reducing financial burdens caused by medical expenses.

Apart from the healthcare announcement, the West Bengal government also approved the immediate transfer of land to the Border Security Force for border fencing work. Officials stated that the fencing project is expected to be completed within 45 days, strengthening border infrastructure and security arrangements in the region.
