Mangaluru
A large-scale fish kill in the Phalguni River near Malavoor-Kenjar on the outskirts of Mangaluru has raised serious concerns over water pollution and environmental neglect. Residents reported that the river water had recently turned dark black before thousands of dead fish began appearing across several stretches of the river earlier this week.
Locals alleged that untreated industrial waste and sewage discharge from nearby facilities have been polluting the river for years. According to residents, repeated complaints to authorities and public representatives failed to bring any permanent solution. Many families living near the river also claimed that water in household wells has become contaminated, making it unsafe for daily use.
People in nearby areas under Bajpe gram panchayat limits have reportedly been facing similar problems linked to water pollution. Frustrated over continued inaction, local representatives warned that public protests may be launched if immediate corrective measures are not taken by concerned authorities.
Officials from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board visited the affected area after the incident came to light. Authorities suspect untreated wastewater from the Pachanady Sewage Treatment Plant may have entered the river directly. Water samples from the river and nearby wells were collected for laboratory testing to identify the exact cause of contamination.
The incident has renewed concerns about unchecked industrial activity, poor waste management, and growing environmental damage affecting the Phalguni River and surrounding communities.
