NEW DELHI
Indian badminton star and Khel Ratna winner Satwiksairaj Rankireddy has addressed the controversy surrounding his recent social media posts, explaining that his frustration stems from a lack of sports culture rather than a desire for money. After the Indian team secured a bronze medal at the 2026 Thomas Cup in Denmark, Satwik noted the “disheartening silence” that met the team upon their arrival home.
The star shuttler had sparked a debate by posting “before and after” photos showing the team’s quiet departure and equally quiet return. Clarifying his stance, Satwik insisted his message was misinterpreted by those who thought he was seeking personal fame or financial rewards. He emphasized that the issue is about making sure athletes feel their hard work for the country is recognized by the general public.
“It is not about wanting grand parades,” Satwik stated in a heartfelt post. “We just want to know that our country is watching and that our efforts are seen.” He argued that when major milestones are ignored, it sends a negative signal to future generations of Indian athletes who are working hard to bring glory to the nation.
His partner, Chirag Shetty, shared similar feelings, noting that while true badminton fans understood the magnitude of a Thomas Cup podium finish, the general public remained unaware. The duo, currently ranked third in the world, called for a culture that celebrates every athlete who wears the Indian jersey, regardless of the sport, to ensure that no victory goes unnoticed.
