A fragile truce in the Middle East has come under severe strain after fresh military exchanges between the United States and Iran in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz raised fears of further escalation and disruption to global energy supplies.

The renewed tensions follow reports of clashes in the Gulf region, where both nations are competing for control over one of the world’s most critical maritime routes. The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage through which a significant share of global oil, fertiliser, and other commodities flows, has been at the center of rising hostilities in recent weeks.
Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf accused the United States and its allies of violating a four-week-old ceasefire, warning that such actions have endangered shipping and energy transit through the waterway. His remarks came amid escalating military activity that has reportedly disrupted commercial shipping and heightened global concerns.
According to U.S. officials, American forces destroyed several Iranian small boats, along with cruise missiles and drones, after deploying naval escorts for stranded tankers under an operation ordered by President Donald Trump. The mission, aimed at securing safe passage for commercial vessels, reflects Washington’s effort to maintain freedom of navigation in the region.
The situation has been further complicated by reports of explosions and fires on multiple merchant ships in the Gulf, as well as missile strikes on an oil port in the United Arab Emirates, which hosts a major U.S. military presence. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has reportedly intensified its posture in the region, employing threats of mines, drones, and fast attack craft, while the United States has responded with a blockade of Iranian ports.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized that there is no military solution to the crisis and indicated that peace talks are ongoing with mediation efforts involving Pakistan. He cautioned against further escalation, warning that deeper involvement by regional actors could lead to prolonged instability.
Conflicting claims from both sides have made it difficult to independently verify events in the strait. While the U.S. military reported that escorted merchant ships successfully navigated the passage, Iranian authorities denied such movements and disputed reports of military losses.
