New action movie struggles to find soul

The highly anticipated period drama KD: The Devil hit the theater, leaving fans with a mix of high-energy thrills and massive headaches. Starring Dhruva Sarja, the film attempts to capture the grand ambition of modern blockbusters but often trips over its own loud and messy execution.

The story follows Kali Dasa, a light-hearted young man who worships a fearsome underworld don played by Sanjay Dutt. However, loyalty turns to conflict when Kali must protect his family from his former idol. While the premise offers a classic foundation for a gritty crime saga, the film struggles under the weight of what critics call “the KGF curse”, an obsession with scale over substance.

Director Prem brings his signature visual flair to the screen, offering stunning frames and impressive set designs. Unfortunately, the technical beauty is overshadowed by a disjointed screenplay and a relentlessly loud background score. Dhruva Sarja delivers a high-octane performance, though his loud mannerisms feel very familiar to his previous roles. Meanwhile, Bollywood veterans Sanjay Dutt and Shilpa Shetty add star power, but their presence cannot fully save the confusing narrative jumps.

Adding to the chaos, the film suffers from visible editing issues and a lack of continuity. Moments of genuine entertainment exist, particularly in the chemistry between the lead pair, but they are buried under layers of exaggeration. In the end, KD: The Devil proves that bigger is not always better. It remains a flashy, violent spectacle that prioritizes noise over a truly gripping story.
