Health officials strengthen heatwave response across Karnataka

Ballari

With rising temperatures and an ongoing heatwave across Karnataka, special sunstroke treatment wards have been set up in major government hospitals in Ballari and Mysuru to handle heat-related emergencies.

In Ballari district, ten-bed sunstroke wards have been opened at the District Hospital and VIMS Hospital as an emergency precaution. Health officials said similar arrangements have also been made in taluk hospitals with five-bed facilities each to treat heatstroke patients.

District health authorities said the extreme heat between 12 noon and 5 pm has increased health risks, especially for children, elderly people and outdoor workers. Officials have advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel during peak heat hours.

District Health Officer Dr. Yella Ramesh Babu and District Surgeon Dr. Basareddy said necessary staff, medicines and treatment facilities have been arranged to manage emergency cases effectively.

In Mysuru, a 20-bed sunstroke ward has been established at K. R. Hospital due to unusually high temperatures in the region. Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Shobha said the city, known for its pleasant climate, is now experiencing severe heat conditions affecting public health.

She said common summer-related health issues include dehydration, viral infections, eye problems, skin irritation, heat exhaustion and other heat-induced illnesses. She also advised people to wear light cotton clothing, use umbrellas, avoid direct sun exposure and drink plenty of water.

Doctors have recommended drinking water regularly, consuming coconut water and fruit juices, and eating water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables to prevent dehydration. People have also been advised to avoid alcohol and smoking during extreme heat conditions.

Health officials said both hospitals are fully equipped with staff and facilities to handle rising cases, and urged citizens to follow safety guidelines during the ongoing heatwave period.
