Demand for strict action in foetal sex detection cases

Nagesh condemned alleged involvement of doctors in illegal foetal destruction cases, calling it shocking, unacceptable, and unforgivable

Jagrita Karnataka District Convener N. Nagesh has demanded strict legal punishment for doctors and others involved in illegal female foetal sex determination cases, calling for scanning centres linked to such activities to be permanently blacklisted.

He said repeated incidents of female foetal sex detection in Mandya district have brought shame to society and the medical profession. He expressed concern that the district has been ranked second in the state for such cases, which reflects a serious social and administrative failure.

He recalled several disturbing incidents, including a 2024 case in Pandavapura where hundreds of female foetuses were allegedly destroyed using scanning equipment in a house, and another reported case in 2025 at Pandavapura Government Hospital quarters. Similar cases were also reported in areas like Hadya and Shivalli.

Nagesh said that recent allegations against medical professionals, including doctors from private diagnostic centres and even a government hospital, have shocked the public. He strongly condemned the involvement of women doctors in such cases, calling it a highly unfortunate and unacceptable act. He said there can be no forgiveness for those responsible for destroying female foetuses before birth.

He pointed out that data shows a growing imbalance in the male and female population ratio in the district, which indicates the seriousness of the issue. He said the repeated mention of Mandya in such cases is deeply embarrassing for the district.

While welcoming the formation of Taluk Vigilance Committees to monitor scanning centres, he questioned their effectiveness, alleging that weak monitoring and lack of accountability among officials have allowed such illegal activities to continue. He also criticised the functioning of health authorities, saying timely action and strict supervision are missing.

He demanded that the district administration and government take strong legal steps to completely stop illegal sex determination practices. He suggested continuous monitoring of scanning centres by vigilance committees and strict punishment, including permanent closure of centres found guilty even once.

He concluded that protecting the girl child is a social responsibility and called for united action from authorities, health officials and the public to prevent such crimes and ensure strict enforcement of the law.
