Rain havoc

BENGALURU

Rain was expected on Wednesday, but few anticipated the intensity it would unleash across Bengaluru as a 40-minute downpour disrupted normal life. Central and eastern parts bore the brunt, with commuters stranded at Metro stations, bus stops and office exits as ankle-deep water accumulated quickly.

With IMD issuing an orange alert, residents questioned whether the city is truly prepared for sudden rain events that have become increasingly frequent. Rahul Goyal, a trader on SJP Road, said authorities must explain what preventive steps have been taken to avoid flooding during short but intense showers, especially in commercial zones.

He added that dug-up roads, potholes and open manholes are major hazards for both motorists and pedestrians, urging civic agencies to complete desilting of drains without delay and ensure debris is not left blocking traffic. SJP Road, he said, was completely inundated, making movement extremely difficult for commuters.

P Dakshinya, a non-IT professional from Mahadevapura, said she was caught in the rain just as she was leaving office and was surprised by how quickly streets turned into streams. What was a pleasant moment soon became a struggle as the route from bus stop to home was flooded within minutes.

Many commuters found their two-wheelers and cars partially submerged in low-lying areas such as Sultanpet and Kamaraj Road, while pedestrians struggled to navigate flooded stretches and exposed manholes on pavements that posed safety risks.

However, not everyone viewed the rain negatively. Those who stayed indoors welcomed the sudden change in weather, saying it brought much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat and improved overall comfort across the city.

Vihan Raj from Whitefield said the rain was a welcome break after weeks of rising temperatures, making travel to Koramangala for his internship more pleasant and less exhausting during daily commutes across the city.

Misha Baniya, a student from SG Palya, said the rain brings freshness to life, with earthy aromas and cool winds creating a calming atmosphere that helps ease stress and refresh the mind after long days.

Authorities said they are monitoring rain-affected areas after IMD issued an orange alert, and assured that teams have been deployed for clearing waterlogging, desilting drains and addressing complaints from residents across Bengaluru. Officials also urged citizens to report open manholes and avoid waterlogged stretches until conditions improve, as intermittent showers are likely to continue over the next few hours in several parts of the city. Officials said close monitoring
