Urgent action demanded after devastating district storm

Following a devastating storm in Shimoga, local leaders are demanding urgent government compensation for destroyed crops, damaged homes, and the immediate restoration of critical power.

SHIMOGA

Life in Shimoga came to a standstill following a violent downpour that ravaged the district. Violent winds and heavy rain destroyed crops and snapped power lines, prompting local leaders to demand immediate government intervention to assist the struggling residents.

Leading the charge, MP B.Y. Raghavendra met with district officials today to submit an urgent appeal. The storm dealt a crushing blow to the farming community, particularly those growing areca nuts. Hundreds of trees were uprooted, representing an irreparable financial loss for local families. In rural pockets like Hanumantapur and Mallapur, the scene was even more dire; roofs were torn off houses, leaving families exposed to the elements.

Public safety is currently the biggest concern. Fallen electric poles have left several areas in total darkness for over twelve hours, creating a life-threatening environment for both people and livestock. The MP has urged Mescom crews to work on a war footing to restore electricity and cleared fallen trees that are blocking major roads.

The district administration has been asked to conduct an immediate survey to calculate crop and property damage. Leaders warned that if compensation and temporary housing for the poor are not provided quickly, large-scale protests will follow. For now, the community waits in the dark, hoping for a swift response to rebuild their broken homes and livelihoods after one of the most destructive storms in recent memory.
