Dakshina Kannada has reported a sharp 120% rise in heart attack cases over the past year, according to district health data comparing two reporting periods. Total cardiac emergencies increased from 3,278 in Period 1 (April 2024–March 2025) to 7,212 in Period 2 (April 2025–February 2026). Wenlock District Hospital recorded the highest surge, rising from 1,752 to 3,320 cases, including a major increase in STEMI cases. Taluk hospitals in Bantwal, Sullia, and Beltangady also showed steady increases. Private hospitals added nearly 1,972 cases in the latest period. Health officials have expressed concern over the trend, urging closer monitoring, lifestyle changes, and stronger preventive healthcare measures across the district and awareness campaigns.
