A wave of devotion and enthusiasm has swept across the region, with pilgrims arriving in large numbers from across India and abroad to undertake the revered journey.
The yatra, considered one of the most important spiritual pilgrimages in Hinduism, began earlier with the opening of Gangotri Temple and Yamunotri Temple on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, following a six-month winter closure.
Amid chants of Vedic hymns and traditional rituals, temple doors were opened, ushering in a new pilgrimage season expected to attract lakhs of devotees.
Traditionally, the pilgrimage follows a west-to-east sequence, beginning at Yamunotri, followed by Gangotri, then Kedarnath, and concluding at Badrinath. Authorities have undertaken extensive preparations to ensure a smooth and safe experience for pilgrims. Measures for security, traffic regulation, and healthcare have been strengthened, while facilities such as sanitation, parking, and accommodation have been upgraded along the routes.
Both online and offline registration systems are currently in place to manage the large influx of visitors. Security personnel, along with State Disaster Response Force teams, have been deployed at key points with a strong focus on disaster preparedness. Helplines and control rooms have also been activated to assist pilgrims and respond to emergencies.
The opening date of Kedarnath is traditionally decided by the Char Dham Temple Committee at the Omkareshwar Temple on the occasion of Maha Shivratri, which was observed on February 15 this year.
The ceremonial opening of Kedarnath is marked by grand rituals. A day before the temple opens, the sacred palanquin carrying the deity is taken in a procession from Gaurikund to the temple, covering a challenging 16-kilometre trek. Priests perform elaborate Vedic rituals before unveiling the idol of Bhagwan Kedarnath for darshan.
With spiritual fervour at its peak and robust arrangements in place, the Char Dham Yatra 2026 has begun on a vibrant and devotional note, drawing thousands of devotees seeking blessings and spiritual solace.
