Small loans spark big dreams across India

Intro: The Mudra Yojana scheme has empowered 58 crore entrepreneurs, especially women and youth, by providing security-free loans for decade-long growth.

NEW DELHI

For 11 years, a quiet revolution has been brewing in the small shops and home businesses of India.

The Mudra Yojana scheme celebrated over a decade of success, proving that you don’t need a massive bank account to start a meaningful business. By offering loans without asking for security, the program has turned everyday citizens into confident entrepreneurs.

Since starting in 2015, the numbers are staggering. Around 58 crore loans have been given out, totaling more than Rs 40 lakh crore. But the real story lies in who is receiving this help. Women are leading the charge, making up two out of every three people getting these loans. This support has helped many join the ranks of “Lakhpati Didis,” becoming powerful financial pillars for their families.

Young dreamers are also stepping up. About 21 percent of these funds went to first-time business owners who previously had no way to get credit. From tiny village stalls to small town workshops, people from all backgrounds are finding their footing. Nearly half of the beneficiaries come from underserved communities, ensuring that progress reaches the very last person in line.

Surprisingly, these small-scale borrowers are incredibly disciplined. The rate of unpaid loans has dropped to a record low of 2.3 percent, proving that grassroots businesses are a safe bet for banks. By offering different loan sizes for every stage of growth, the government is ensuring that no dream is too small to be funded.

The Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana is helping people in Giridih district start small businesses and earn their own income. Many residents have opened shops, tailoring units, water plants, and e-rickshaw services using easy, collateral-free loans. Women are especially benefiting and stepping forward as entrepreneurs.

Munni Kumari, who lives on Ashram Road, used support from the scheme to set up a mineral water plant. Her business now provides steady earnings and jobs for others. Her family said they once struggled financially but found hope after learning about the loan program and applying through the district office.

Bank officials said thousands of people in Jharkhand have received loans worth crores, leading to more self-employment. The scheme, launched in 2015, continues to improve livelihoods and build confidence among small business owners. Officials say approvals and simple rules have encouraged families to expand businesses and plan better futures for their children.
