Messi scores at new stadium but Inter Miami held by Austin

Lionel Messi marked the historic opening of Inter Miami CF’s new home with a goal, but the hosts were held to an entertaining 2-2 draw by Austin FC in a Major League Soccer clash.

The much-anticipated debut of the 26,000-capacity Nu Stadium brought a festive atmosphere, with co-owner David Beckham among the dignitaries celebrating a milestone moment for the club. Beckham described the occasion as a “dream come true” after years of effort to establish a permanent base in Miami.

However, the on-field script did not entirely follow the celebratory mood. Austin stunned the home crowd early when Guilherme Biro headed in a corner delivered by Facundo Torres in just the sixth minute.

Messi quickly responded, opening his account in the new stadium with a rare headed goal. The Argentine maestro connected with a cross from Ian Fray to level the score, delighting the packed stands.

Inter Miami then dominated possession, creating multiple chances through players like Mateo Silvetti, but were unable to convert their superiority into a lead. Austin remained dangerous on the counterattack and regained the advantage in the second half. After Messi was dispossessed, a swift move involving Joseph Rosales and Myrto Uzuni set up Jayden Nelson, who calmly finished to make it 2-1.

With time running out, Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano introduced veteran striker Luis Suarez, a move that paid dividends. Suarez equalised in the 81st minute, reacting quickest to a flick inside the box following a Messi corner.

Suarez appeared to have snatched a dramatic late winner moments later, finishing after Messi’s free-kick rebounded off the woodwork. However, the goal was ruled out for offside, denying Miami a perfect start in their new stadium.

While the result may not have matched the occasion, Messi’s goal ensured a memorable opening night, as Inter Miami begin a new chapter in their history.
