Sheetal Devi described her ‘Para Archer of the Year’ recognition as “deeply personal” after being honoured by World Archery for a breakthrough season that has redefined possibilities in the sport.
The Indian para archer, who was born with phocomelia and competes without arms, expressed heartfelt gratitude after receiving the prestigious award, which celebrates her exceptional performances and inspiring journey over the past year.
“This one feels deeply personal… a heart filled with gratitude,” Devi wrote, reflecting on a journey marked by perseverance and historic achievements.
Her rise to global prominence was cemented at the World Archery Para Championships in Gwangju, where she clinched her maiden world title. In doing so, she became the first woman without arms to win a world championship in para archery, defeating Paralympic champion Oznur Cure Girdi in the compound women’s individual final.
Devi’s success extended beyond the individual event. She also secured a silver medal in the women’s team competition and a bronze in the mixed team category, underlining her consistency at the highest level.
Her unique shooting technique, which relies on remarkable balance and precision, has drawn widespread admiration across the sporting world. Beyond the world championships, she has built an impressive medal tally across major tournaments, including the Asian Championships, Asian Para Games, and the Paralympic Games.
In 2025, Devi became the first Indian archer to win the BBC Emerging Athlete of the Year award, following her mixed team bronze medal alongside Rakesh Kumar at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. She has also been recognised as World Archery Para Woman of the Year and received the Arjuna Award in 2024.
Adding another milestone, Devi was selected for India’s able-bodied compound team for the Asia Cup in Jeddah — a rare feat that highlights her versatility.
Her journey continues to inspire, symbolising resilience, innovation, and excellence on the global stage.
