S. Jaishankar stressed the importance of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) in improving global connectivity during ongoing tensions in West Asia.
Speaking at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in France, he said current conflicts highlight the need for stronger and more reliable trade routes and supply chains. He noted that disruptions in the region make it essential to build secure and resilient economic links.
Jaishankar pointed out that India’s growing trade agreements, including those with the European Union, European Free Trade Association, and the United Kingdom, have increased the value and usefulness of IMEC. He said these partnerships are helping strengthen economic cooperation and connectivity across regions.
He also appreciated the rising interest among global partners in supporting the IMEC initiative. According to him, this reflects a shared understanding of the need for stable and efficient trade corridors.
During the meeting, Jaishankar raised the need for reforms in the United Nations Security Council. He highlighted issues affecting the Global South, including energy shortages, fertiliser supply concerns, and food security challenges.
On the sidelines, he held discussions with officials from the UK and Germany to review bilateral ties and global issues. He described the talks as productive and focused on strengthening cooperation.
Jaishankar arrived in France for the two-day meeting and was welcomed by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, marking the start of key diplomatic engagements.
