Rahul postpones Kerala visit amid Sonia’s hospitalisation

Kozhikode
Rahul Gandhi, who previously represented Wayanad in the Lok Sabha, was scheduled to visit Kozhikode to campaign for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).

His presence was expected to boost the morale of party workers and provide momentum in key constituencies, particularly in the politically significant Malabar region where electoral contests are often closely fought.

However, due to Sonia Gandhi’s health condition requiring immediate medical attention, Rahul Gandhi decided to remain in Delhi, prioritising family responsibilities over political engagements. Party sources indicated that the decision was taken at short notice, resulting in the postponement of his visit. While no new date has been announced yet, Congress leaders expressed confidence that he would join the campaign at a later stage, depending on the situation.

In response to the change in plans, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has stepped in to lead the campaign efforts in Kerala. Kharge is expected to address multiple public meetings and engage with party workers across the state, focusing on strengthening support for UDF candidates ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled for April 9.

The Congress leadership believes that Kharge’s presence will help maintain the campaign’s momentum during a crucial phase. Senior party leaders in the state have also downplayed concerns about Rahul Gandhi’s absence, asserting that the UDF campaign remains well-organised and continues to receive strong grassroots support.

They pointed to the alliance’s performance in the recent local body elections as evidence of its growing strength, noting that the results had dealt a setback to the CPI(M)-led Left Front. Despite the temporary setback in campaign scheduling, the Congress remains optimistic about its prospects in the upcoming Assembly polls.
