Tata Steel Opens Scrap Based Furnace

Tata Steel launches India’s first scrap-based electric furnace in Ludhiana, boosting green steel production and supporting its long-term net zero emissions goal

Mumbai

Tata Steel on Friday commissioned its first scrap-based Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) at Hi-Tech Valley in Ludhiana, marking an important move towards greener steel production. The facility, developed with an investment of ₹3,200 crore, has an annual capacity of 0.75 million tonnes and is designed to keep carbon emissions below 0.3 tonnes per tonne of steel.

The project aligns with the company’s long-term goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2045. The plant will operate using nearly 50 per cent renewable energy and rely entirely on steel scrap as raw material, with around 40 per cent sourced from its recycling unit in Rohtak, Haryana.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Bhagwant Singh Mann, along with Chairman N Chandrasekaran and CEO T V Narendran.

The new plant will manufacture construction-grade steel under the Tata Tiscon brand, helping the company expand its footprint in the construction sector. Officials highlighted that the project reflects Tata Steel’s focus on adopting low-carbon technologies and promoting a circular economy.

In addition to industrial growth, the company has also contributed to local development over the past three years through initiatives such as skill training for youth, livelihood support for women, installation of solar-powered streetlights, promotion of sustainable farming practices, and scholarship programs, benefiting communities around the plant.
