NRR battle intensifies as Pakistan seek decisive victory in Colombo
Colombo
Former champions Pakistan face a do-or-die encounter against Namibia in their final Group A fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Wednesday, with qualification for the Super 8s hanging in the balance.
While India have already sealed their berth following a commanding 61-run win over Pakistan earlier this week, the second qualification spot remains up for grabs. Both Pakistan and the United States are locked on four points, but the USA hold a significant advantage in net run rate (0.788) compared to Pakistan’s negative -0.403.
The equation is simple for Pakistan: win, and they stay alive. Any slip-up would leave them relying on other results and complex permutations.
Led by Salman Ali Agha, Pakistan’s campaign has been jolted by their defeat to India, which exposed familiar frailties in their batting. The spotlight will once again be on Babar Azam and the top order after their collapse in the previous match. Reduced to 13 for three by India’s pace attack, Pakistan never recovered, raising concerns about their approach in high-pressure games.
Shaheen Shah Afridi, too, will be eager to rediscover rhythm after an expensive spell against India. Early breakthroughs against Namibia could prove decisive in easing nerves within the Pakistani camp.
Despite being winless, Namibia have shown discipline and tactical sharpness. Captain Gerhard Erasmus impressed with a four-wicket haul against India and will relish testing Pakistan’s vulnerable middle order. With JJ Smit’s pace and Louren Steenkamp’s steady starts at the top, Namibia have the tools to challenge.
For Pakistan, the path is clear — deliver a clinical performance or risk an early exit.
