Price rise burden

Even as consumers were rejoicing over the recent GST rate reduction, the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has announced a steep hike in the price of its flagship product, Nandini Ghee, triggering mixed reactions across the state. The federation has increased the retail price by ₹90 per kilogram, taking it from ₹610 to ₹700 per kg, effective immediately.
According to the official circular, the revised ghee prices will take effect from today, while the rates of other Nandini dairy products will remain unchanged.
The sudden increase has sparked widespread debate among consumers, many of whom are already grappling with the rising costs of fuel, transport, and essential commodities. With this revision, the once “soft on pocket” Nandini Ghee now joins the list of products burdening household budgets.
Explaining the reason for the price revision, KMF Managing Director Shivaswamy said the decision was unavoidable due to surging production, procurement, and transport costs.
“We have revised the price of Nandini Ghee by ₹90 per kilogram. The new price is ₹700. This decision was taken after carefully assessing rising operational expenses,” he stated.
He further clarified that KMF has been passing the benefits of increased milk procurement prices directly to farmers, without diverting the funds to the federation.
“Compared to private brands, our ghee remains cheaper. The direct payments to farmers and higher management and logistics costs necessitated this revision,” Shivaswamy explained.
Meanwhile, rumours of an impending milk price hike were also addressed by KMF.
“There is no proposal to increase milk prices. The last revision was in April, and the additional amount was directly passed on to farmers,” Shivaswamy assured, putting consumer concerns to rest for now.
