Burglary at Sri Shettihallamma Temple in Channarayapatna Caught on CCTV

A daring burglary at the Sri Shettihallamma Temple in Shettihalli village, Channarayapatna taluk, was caught on CCTV cameras in the early hours of Sunday. The footage shows the thief breaking the temple’s main door lock with an iron rod and forcibly opening the cash box using other tools.

According to reports, the intruder entered the sanctum sanctorum wearing shoes and slippers, an act that has angered devotees who consider the place sacred. The burglar was seen rummaging through the area, apparently looking for jewellery or other valuables kept in the temple.

The incident has shocked the local community, as the temple is revered by devotees from seven surrounding villages and even attracts visitors from neighbouring districts. Daily rituals and poojas are conducted regularly, drawing hundreds of devotees to offer prayers and donations.

A few months ago, a similar theft attempt had taken place at the same temple, but the suspect was caught by vigilant villagers. Following that, CCTV cameras were installed to prevent further incidents — a step that proved crucial in recording Sunday’s break-in.

Villagers suspect that the burglars targeted the temple knowing that a substantial amount of money had been recently collected in the hundi during festival days. They have urged police to act swiftly and ensure the safety of the temple premises.

Channarayapatna Rural Police visited the spot, reviewed the CCTV footage, and have launched an investigation to trace and apprehend the culprits. Devotees have demanded increased night patrols and stricter security measures around temples in the region to prevent such recurring incidents.
