Rizwan’s ODI Captaincy Under Review as PCB Calls Meeting

KARACHI

Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan’s future as ODI captain faces uncertainty, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) convening a joint meeting of the national selection committee and the advisory board in Lahore on Monday. The meeting, called at the request of Pakistan’s white-ball head coach Mike Hesson, will focus on reviewing the ODI team’s recent performances and leadership structure.

A PCB statement confirmed that no decision has yet been taken regarding the ODI captaincy. “The chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, has asked selectors and advisors to meet on Monday to discuss the matter,” it said. Hesson will also attend the session.

Currently, Pakistan has separate captains for each format — Shan Masood for Tests, Rizwan for ODIs, and Salman Ali Agha for T20s. However, reports suggest potential changes, with Shaheen Shah Afridi or Salman Ali Agha being considered for the 50-over role.

The selection panel includes Aaqib Javed, Asad Shafiq, Aleem Dar, and Azhar Ali, while Sarfaraz Ahmed and Sikander Bakht serve as advisors directly reporting to the chairman.

Rizwan, who was sidelined from T20s alongside Babar Azam since late 2024, had earlier led Pakistan to ODI series victories in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. However, the team’s performance declined during the home tri-series against South Africa and New Zealand, and later in bilateral series against New Zealand and the West Indies.

The upcoming meeting is expected to determine whether the PCB will retain Rizwan’s leadership or opt for a new direction in ODI cricket.
