Kannada writer-criti Mogalli Ganesh passes away

Bengaluru: Senior writer, novelist, critic and thinker Dr Mogalli Ganesh died on Sunday morning in Hospet due to multiple organ failure. He was 62.

He is survived by his wife and three daughters. Family sources have said that his funeral rites will be conducted in Madanayakanahalli of Maddur taluk of Mandya district.

Dr. Ganesh, who was born in Santhemogenahalli of Channapatna taluk on July 1, 1963, was professor in the Department of Folklore Studies at the Kannada University, Hampi and the current Head of the Department. Further, he had held the post of director of the ‘Varanata Dr. Rajkumar Research Centre’ at the University.

His prominent works include various story collections, ‘Buguri’, ‘Mannu’, ‘Atte’, ‘Bhoomi’, ‘Kannemale’, ‘Mogalli Kathegalu’ and ‘Devara Daari’; novels, ‘Thottilu’, ‘Kireeta’ and ‘Beru’; essay collection ‘Kathana’, critical works, ‘Sollu’, ‘Vimarshe’, ‘Shamba Bhashika Samshodhane’ and ‘Thakaraaru’ and analytical works, ‘Ambedkar Emba Mahanadai and ‘Dalitheekaranagonda Gandhiji’.

In addition, while Dr. Ganesh has translated several works of other languages into Kannada, his own works have been translated into many other languages.

Dr. Ganesh was honoured with several awards, including Dr. Besagarahalli Ramanna Prashasti, Masti Katha Prashasti and Karnataka Akademi Prashasti.

Minister of Kannada and Culture Shivaraj Tangadagi has expressed sorrow at the death of Dr. Ganesh, saying the contribution of the scholar to Kannada literature was unique. “His poetry works ‘Suryanannu Bacchidabahude?’ and ‘Anadi’ had earned him great popularity. Kannada literature has lost a prominent figure with the passing away of Dr. Ganesh,” the minister added.
