Brisbane
India Under-19s delivered a clinical all-round performance to defeat Australia Under-19s by an innings and 58 runs in the first Youth Test at Ian Healy Oval, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Batting first, Australia were dismissed for 243. Pace spearhead Deepesh Devendran ripped through the batting order with 5 for 45, while left-arm seamer Kishan Kumar added three wickets. The only resistance came from No. 3 batter Steven Hogan, who fought hard for 92 from 246 balls.
In reply, India piled on 428, building a decisive 185-run lead. Vaibhav Suryavanshi set the tone with a blistering 113 off just 86 deliveries, smashing nine fours and eight sixes. Vedant Trivedi followed with a patient, well-crafted 140, featuring 19 boundaries. All-rounder Khilan Patel provided late fireworks with a quick 49 off 49 balls to extend India’s dominance.
Australia’s second innings mirrored their first as early wickets fell rapidly. Kishan and Deepesh tore through the top order, reducing them to 24 for 3. Khilan Patel struck again with figures of 3 for 19, before Deepesh returned to clean up the tail with 3 for 16, completing match figures of eight wickets. Aryan Sharma’s fighting 43 from No. 9 only delayed India’s victory.
Australia were eventually bundled out for 127, handing India a commanding win. The visitors will now aim to seal the series in the second and final Youth Test, beginning October 7 in Brisbane.
