The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has reported steady progress in its ongoing white topping (WT) works aimed at improving road durability and easing commuter woes across key city stretches. The Bengaluru Smart Mobility Implementation Limited (BSMILE), which is overseeing the initiative, confirmed on Saturday that several prominent roads have already undergone white topping.
According to officials, the stretches where work has been completed include Srinivasnagar, MM Road, Govindpura, Kalsipalya Road, and Vyalikaval Road. These areas were chosen based on heavy vehicular movement and recurring damage during monsoon seasons, which often resulted in uneven surfaces and potholes. White topping, which involves laying a concrete layer over existing asphalt, is considered a long-term solution that enhances the life of roads and minimizes frequent repairs.
Officials from BSMILE noted that once completed, the upgraded roads will provide smoother rides, reduce vehicle maintenance costs, and improve traffic flow. The technology is also seen as a cost-effective alternative in the long run, despite higher initial investment, as concrete roads require less maintenance compared to traditional asphalt roads. The GBA emphasized that the work is being carried out in phases to minimize inconvenience to daily commuters and businesses located along these stretches. Traffic diversions have been planned in coordination with the city traffic police to ensure safety and reduce congestion during construction. Residents in localities where work has been completed have already begun to experience smoother travel, with civic authorities assuring similar results across other stretches as the project progresses.
