GBA launches intensive clean-up drive at KR Market

Greater Bengaluru Authority launches major KR Market cleanup drive to tackle sanitation and encroachment issues.

In a determined push to restore order and hygiene at one of Bengaluru’s busiest commercial hubs, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) launched a comprehensive clean-up drive at KR Market on Saturday. The initiative was spearheaded by GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao, along with Bengaluru Central City Corporation (BCCC) Commissioner Rajendra Cholan, who conducted a detailed inspection of the market premises. The effort targeted long-standing issues of sanitation lapses, illegal encroachments, and deteriorating infrastructure that have troubled traders and visitors for years.

During the inspection, Chief Commissioner Rao directed officials to ensure round-the-clock cleanliness in and around the market. He mandated that every shop must be equipped with waste bins, while marshals have been instructed to impose fines on anyone found littering. Authorities have also been tasked with developing a master plan for effective waste management to handle the large volume of garbage generated daily at the market.

Encroachment was highlighted as another pressing concern. Rao ordered the immediate removal of unauthorized structures and warned of strict legal action against repeat offenders. He also instructed officials to urgently repair damaged steps and roof sheets, implement measures to prevent waterlogging, and restore public toilets to ensure accessibility and functionality for both traders and shoppers. Senior engineers and executive officials accompanied the commissioners during the inspection, underscoring the administration’s resolve to resolve civic issues that have been neglected for years. Authorities believe these steps will not only improve hygiene and safety but also enhance the overall shopping experience at KR Market, which continues to remain one of Bengaluru’s most vibrant yet congested trading centers.
