Bengaluru Authorities Push for a Sustainable and Climate-Resilient City
Bengaluru authorities on Thursday held a high-level meeting to evaluate ongoing and upcoming initiatives aimed at making the city more sustainable and resilient to climate challenges. The meeting was chaired by GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao and included Smt. Preeti Gehlot, Special Commissioner (FECCM, Elections, Disaster Management and Public Relations), Dr. Harish Kumar, Special Commissioner (Finance), and representatives from key partner organizations including WRI India and C40 Cities.
During the session, officials discussed crucial measures to ensure a resilient urban environment, including setting ambitious net-zero targets, implementing climate budgeting, and establishing MER (Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting) frameworks. The creation of Climate Action Clubs and clean air zones across the city were also highlighted as priority interventions to engage communities and reduce pollution.
The team further deliberated on developing a comprehensive masterplan for sponge spaces—green and water-absorbent urban areas designed to manage stormwater and reduce flooding risks. These initiatives are part of the city’s broader strategy to enhance environmental sustainability while promoting citizen participation in climate action.
Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts between government bodies, private partners, and the public to achieve a greener Bengaluru. Authorities also urged residents to actively contribute to climate initiatives and stay informed about the city’s environmental programs. Officials confirmed that detailed action plans and timelines for each initiative would be shared publicly once final approvals and consultations are completed.
