Israel presses Hamas to surrender amid heavy strikes in Gaza

Israeli strikes near city center killed 14, including civilians. Military targeted Hamas militant, citing warnings.

Israel renewed calls on Hamas to surrender on Sunday as heavy strikes hit Gaza City, where hundreds of thousands remain trapped. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said the war could end if Hamas freed hostages and laid down arms. Hamas rejected this, offering instead to release captives if Israel halted its offensive and withdrew forces.

Israeli troops, already close to the city centre, launched overnight strikes that killed 14 people, including civilians sheltering in a school. The military said a Hamas militant was targeted and that warnings were issued beforehand. High-rise buildings sheltering displaced families were also destroyed, which Israel claimed were used by militants, though Hamas denied the charge.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the capture of Gaza City last month, despite warnings that hunger and displacement are worsening. Health officials report tens of thousands killed since the war began after Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack, which left 1,200 Israelis dead and 251 abducted. Of the 48 hostages still in Gaza, officials believe around 20 are alive.

The war’s toll is fueling unrest. Protesters in Tel Aviv joined hostage families, demanding a deal. Meanwhile, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen urged Israel to “change course” and address the humanitarian crisis.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington is in “very deep” talks with Hamas, raising hopes for a breakthrough. Hamas has floated temporary ceasefire terms tied to hostage releases, echoing failed July negotiations.

Despite warnings, many Palestinians refuse to flee again, sheltering in overcrowded encampments. Residents plead for peace as Gaza City faces relentless destruction, deepening one of the region’s gravest crises.
