Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda has expressed happiness over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visits to Japan and China, describing them as steps towards strengthening India’s multilateral partnerships globally despite the ongoing U.S. tariff war.
In a media statement, Deve Gowda also conveyed his strong dissatisfaction with U.S. tariff policies, calling them unreasonable and unjust.
In a letter addressed to Modi, he wrote: “I closely followed the news of your visits to Japan and China. After the United States launched an arbitrary and unjust trade war, your effort to find alternative pathways has brought me, like all Indians, a sense of reassurance. Both your visits were highly successful, and I believe India will benefit from the dialogues you held and the new initiatives you pursued.
Faith is on our side, and India, with its vast economy, immense population, and the reach of democratic values, stands apart globally. Sooner or later, even the U.S. will have to engage with us.”
He noted that the photographs and videos of Modi with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping flooded global media, symbolizing more than routine diplomacy. “This reflects a new awakening at the global level and perhaps marks the beginning of a new world where India stands at the center of peace and prosperity.”
On the Ukraine conflict, Gowda said he was pleased Modi had spoken with Putin about ending the war. “Your multi-alignment policy will yield significant dividends in the future. The world has begun to recognize its importance. Compared to our earlier doctrine of non-alignment, this is a more constructive and positive formulation.”
He added that changing times required India to speak a new language—one aligned with its needs, rules, and civilizational depth. “This will make India stand tall before the world.”
Concluding his letter, Deve Gowda said: “At present, you have shown determination to turn challenges into opportunities, without sacrificing core values. This requires immense patience and self-confidence. May God bless you with more strength and good health.”
