RowMuslim Leaders Differ on Banu Mushtaq’s Role in Dasara Inauguration

The Karnataka government’s decision to invite Booker Prize-winning author Banu Mushtaq to inaugurate this year’s Dasara festival has sparked sharp debate. While Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has stood firmly by the choice, political and community leaders remain divided.

The BJP has objected to Mushtaq leading the ceremony, arguing that a Muslim woman presiding over a predominantly Hindu festival is inappropriate. Party leaders contend that the event should reflect Hindu traditions.

Within the Muslim community too, opinions are split. Former Waqf Board chairman Shafi Saadi questioned the double standards, noting that no objections were raised when poet Nisar Ahmed had inaugurated Dasara in earlier years. He stressed that Dasara is a state festival celebrating Karnataka’s culture and heritage, not just a religious occasion, and that Mushtaq’s literary achievements justify the honour.

Others, however, voiced concern that her participation could conflict with Islamic practices that forbid idol worship, suggesting it could be seen as inconsistent with her faith.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind secretary Mohammad Kunhi downplayed the controversy, stating that the festival is cultural in nature and open to all. He added that the government had invited Mushtaq as a guest, and ultimately, the decision to participate rests with her.

The debate continues, highlighting the delicate balance between Karnataka’s cultural inclusivity and religious sensitivities.
