Droupadi Murmu urged for early detection of communication disorders, greater awareness, and self-reliance in assistive technology manufacturing.

President Droupadi Murmu attended the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) in Mysuru on Monday, highlighting the institute’s pivotal role in addressing communication disorders.
In her address, the President stressed the importance of early detection and expert diagnosis of speech and hearing issues, while calling for greater societal awareness, compassion, and cooperation toward those affected. She lauded AIISH’s contributions, including the Inclusive Therapy Park for children with communication disorders and the AIISH Arogya Vani initiative, which spreads awareness about early identification.
She emphasized that AIISH, as a national-level institute, should aspire to become a role model globally, advising on policies related to communication disorders and promoting innovation. She underscored the need for India to become self-reliant in producing devices such as cochlear implants to ensure affordability and accessibility.
President Murmu also praised government initiatives like Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan, aimed at creating a barrier-free environment for divyangjan, ensuring equal opportunities, and making public spaces and services accessible.
During her visit, the President interacted with children undergoing treatment at AIISH and individuals who had overcome challenges with the institute’s support. She called upon institutions like AIISH to work with innovation, compassion, and collaboration, developing technologies that empower persons with disabilities to lead dignified lives and contribute meaningfully to society.
