India will soon roll out a dedicated sports goods manufacturing policy aimed at strengthening domestic production and making the country a global exporter, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Saturday. Speaking at the Sports Goods and Manufacturing Conclave, he announced that a new scheme would be launched by November-December this year.
Mandaviya said the initiative would help athletes access world-class equipment without depending heavily on costly imports. “By November-December, a scheme will be launched so that the country can become the best sports goods manufacturer, one that provides top-class facilities, empowers the ecosystem, and helps India emerge as a prominent exporter,” he stated.
The minister added that the larger plan would not be limited to goods alone but also cover sports medicines, infrastructure, literature, and education design. “The sports ecosystem is growing at a fast pace. Our country has the capability to achieve everything, but we must address challenges like GST and create policies to strengthen this sector,” Mandaviya noted. He emphasized the need for a dedicated task force to drive reforms in manufacturing.
Highlighting the government’s commitment, Mandaviya linked the initiative to the broader National Sports Governance Bill, where the first pillar was athlete-centric governance. He said the conclave was an important step in reforming the sector, with the aim of providing solutions for disputes, boosting production, and creating a strong export base.
The ministry will work with stakeholders, including manufacturers and NITI Aayog, to finalize the framework. “Policies will be made through discussions with all stakeholders. The work of policy framing will be completed by September,” the minister added.
