Jaishankar stresses stronger India-Russia complementary partnership

Jaishankar said meeting reviewed bilateral ties, discussing politics, trade, defence, investments, science, technology, and people exchanges

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Thursday underlined that the shared goal of India and Russia is to “maximise complementarity,” expressing confidence that his talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov would be “fruitful and productive.” He said the discussions would help prepare a successful and outcome-driven annual summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin later this year.

Jaishankar said the meeting provided an opportunity to review bilateral ties and exchange views on politics, trade, defence, economic investments, science, technology, and people-to-people exchanges. He highlighted that the India-Russia partnership, described as a Special and Privileged Strategic relationship, has been guided by leaders at past summits, including the 22nd Annual Summit and other high-level interactions.

The minister recalled his recent meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov at the Inter-Governmental Commission, where many issues of cooperation were resolved. He stressed that the aim now is to build on those talks and deliver maximum outcomes during the upcoming Modi-Putin summit.

Jaishankar also referred to other recent visits by Indian officials to Moscow, including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, calling these visits a sign of deepening ties. He noted that today’s dialogue is shaped by global geopolitical shifts and changing trade dynamics.

On Wednesday, Jaishankar co-chaired the 26th session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological, and Cultural Cooperation with Manturov. He later addressed the India-Russia Business Forum, urging businesses to increase trade, investments, and joint ventures to strengthen the economic pillar of the strategic partnership.
