Vaishnaw hails India’s progress in chip making

Blueprints To Breakthroughs

New Delhi

India’s push to build its semiconductor ecosystem received a strong boost on Monday, with Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw praising the country’s strides in chip design and manufacturing. He said the progress is an important step toward making India a true “product nation.”

Posting on X, Vaishnaw highlighted that developing chipsets with indigenous intellectual property is a key goal of the government’s semiconductor mission. He pointed to the Design Linked Incentives (DLI) scheme, which supports startups working on chip design, as a crucial driver in this journey.

As an example, he cited IIT-Madras incubated Mindgrove Technologies, a fabless semiconductor startup founded in 2021. The company has designed secure IoT chips with policy support under the DLI scheme. These chips are being developed for use in CCTV cameras, Industry 4.0 equipment, and other Internet of Things (IoT) products.

Mindgrove recently placed its first mass-manufacturing order with a partner foundry, marking a major milestone for India’s chip-making efforts. In September last year, the firm also received Rs 15 crore under the DLI scheme to build its second product line, a Vision SoC aimed at powering advanced devices.

Vaishnaw stressed that India’s semiconductor mission is not just about building factories but about creating products with original design and intellectual property that can compete globally. With startups like Mindgrove leading the way, the government believes India is steadily moving closer to its ambition of being a global product and technology leader.

The minister’s remarks underline how innovation, academic collaboration, and policy incentives are together shaping India’s future in advanced electronics.
