Awami leaders, ex-EC Secretary face arrest orders

Helal Uddin was arrested after BNP’s Salah Uddin Khan accused him, ex-commissioners of poll manipulation; later charged with treason, fraud, and embezzlement

A Bangladeshi court on Monday ordered former Law Minister Anisul Huq to be shown arrested in two cases linked to last year’s July protests. Former Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed was also taken into custody in a separate case of alleged election fraud, according to local media reports.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monirul Islam passed the order after Huq was produced before the court. He faces cases related to the killing of electrician Mohammad Shawon Sikder and the attempted murder of Ashraful alias Fahin during the July demonstrations in Dhaka. Shawon was reportedly shot dead near Eden College on July 19, 2024, while Ashraful alleged he was injured by gunfire on July 18 at Azimpur government colony.

Cases against Huq also name former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and dozens of Awami League leaders. Hasina was ousted in August 2024 and has faced multiple charges since then.

Meanwhile, Helal Uddin was arrested in a case filed by BNP leader Salah Uddin Khan, accusing him and former election commissioners of manipulating Bangladesh’s 10th to 12th parliamentary polls. Additional charges of treason, fraud, and embezzlement were later added.

On Sunday, police also detained former Awami League MP Shafiqul Islam Opu on charges of vandalism and arson at a BNP office in Jhenaidah.

Analysts see these arrests as part of a broader crackdown on Awami League leaders by the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, which critics accuse of political revenge.
