Tottenham Hotspur has named Cristian Romero as the new club captain following Heung-Min Son’s move to Los Angeles FC. The announcement was made by coach Thomas Frank ahead of Tottenham’s UEFA Super Cup match against PSG in Italy.
Romero, who was vice-captain since August 2023, expressed his honor on social media. “Becoming the first captain of this beautiful club is an incredible honor,” he said. “I arrived here four years ago with a dream to make history and win trophies. Now, a new journey begins, and together we will work hard for a great season.”
Frank praised Romero’s leadership, both on and off the pitch, saying he drives the team forward and deserves the captaincy. The coach also plans to appoint a leadership group of four to five players to support Romero and the team during the season.
The 27-year-old Argentine defender joined Spurs in 2021 from Atalanta after being named Serie A’s Best Defender. He has made 100 appearances for Tottenham and played a vital role in their UEFA Europa League victory last season.
The team is currently preparing for a big season under Romero’s leadership.
