India’s new Integrated State and City Logistics Plan aims to improve supply chain efficiency while helping the country meet its sustainability goals. The plan encourages the use of low- and zero-emission vehicles and the creation of low-emission freight zones, reports said.
Launched in partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the plan covers eight cities across eight states: Ludhiana, Shimla, Jaipur, Indore, Patna, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, and Guwahati. The goal is to assess current logistics infrastructure, identify problems, and prepare roadmaps for improvement.
Led by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the plan focuses on freight needs from local retailers and e-commerce businesses. It prioritizes better truck terminals, urban roads, and last-mile delivery systems to speed up goods movement.
ADB provides technical support to align state-level logistics strategies with city freight networks and wider transportation goals. Officials said the plan aims to connect growth hubs to main highways and improve urban freight systems to boost supply chain strength.
Sustainability efforts include adopting cleaner vehicles for last-mile deliveries and introducing noise-reduction measures. DPIIT also emphasized the use of automation and data to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and increase transparency in freight operations.
Planning is expected to take 6 to 8 months. If approved, the government may seek further support from ADB for implementation, aiming to replicate these successful logistics models across India.
