MANGALURU
In the coastal city there is now shortage of water for beer production. As Municipal Corporation has started rationing in water supply, the beer unit is not getting sufficient water supply. Thus, tanker water is required   and is affecting production of beer.
Beer is more popular than whiskey and wine in summer.  The demand for beer has tripled in the district. But beer is not being supplied in sufficient quantity. Since the rationing of water supply has started from  Corporation to the beer production unit of Bykampady for the past one month, the beer producers are resorting to tanker water. Beer production has not stopped because the tanker ran out of water. But the departmental statistics say that beer is not being produced in the expected amount.
At present the city is being supplied with water once in two days. Last year, due to summer rains in March, there was not much shortage of water then. This time it has not rained much like summer. So the water storage in Tumbe dam which supplies water to Mangalore city is decreasing day by day. This has led beer factories to resort to tanker water.
Although there is a beer plant in Mangalore, the production is very less. According to Excise Department statistics, instead of pints and tins, beer is produced and sold only in bottles. Last year in April 2.53 lakh boxes, one box containing 12 bottles of beer were produced, this time only 2.48 lakh boxes were produced. Only four types of beer are produced, everything else is being supplied from here to Mysore and Bangalore. It has a production capacity of 3 lakh boxes of beer in three shifts.
