Several roadside practitioners can reportedly be seen along the Ambedkar Stadium Road towards Station Road, displaying dental treatment materials and making attractive promises to passers-by. They claim that a new tooth can be fitted in as little as 15 minutes, while loose teeth can be strengthened and tooth-cleaning powders are also available. Some practitioners further claim that decayed teeth can be treated by filling them with ceramic or silver materials. One of the more striking claims is that 32 teeth can be fitted within just three hours without pain.
Such claims have attracted the attention of residents, particularly those looking for inexpensive dental treatment. However, the increasing presence of roadside dental practitioners has also raised concerns among members of the public and healthcare professionals about whether such procedures are being carried out by qualified and registered dental practitioners. Dental treatment requires proper examination of the patient’s teeth, gums, jaw and overall oral health. Procedures such as tooth extraction, fillings, crowns, dentures and other dental interventions generally require appropriate instruments, sterilisation facilities and clinical expertise. Treatment carried out in an unhygienic environment can potentially expose patients to infections and other complications.
The claims made by roadside practitioners should therefore be independently verified before patients undergo any procedure. In particular, patients are advised to check whether the person providing treatment possesses the necessary dental qualifications and registration and whether the establishment is authorised to provide clinical dental services. The issue has also highlighted the need for greater public awareness about oral healthcare.
