India’s fastest sprinter Gurindervir Singh finished second in his men’s 100m opening-round heat at the Commonwealth Games on Monday, clocking 10.39 seconds. The 25-year-old athlete started well from lane five and stayed close to Jamaica’s Rohan Watson during the early stages of the race. However, Watson increased his pace in the final 30-35 metres to win comfortably with a time of 10.13 seconds. The race had a legal tailwind of 1.9 m/s.
Gurindervir’s performance was below his national record of 10.09 seconds, which he set at the Federation Cup in Ranchi earlier this year. He became the first Indian athlete to break the 10.10-second barrier and created history with that achievement. Qualification for the semifinals will be confirmed after all heats are completed, with selected athletes moving forward to the next round. Earlier, Nigeria’s Favour Ashe won the opening heat in 10.10 seconds, while other top sprinters also delivered impressive performances across their races. Gurindervir now hopes to improve his timing in the upcoming rounds and continue India’s strong campaign at the Commonwealth Games as he aims for a place in the final and a memorable result for the nation. His determination and recent record-breaking achievements have made him one of India’s most promising sprint talents in recent years. He will look to deliver a better performance in future races.
