In a disturbing incident in Gangondanahalli, a man allegedly ended his eight-year marriage by pronouncing triple talaq to his wife over the phone, despite the practice being banned in India. The call reportedly lasted just 10 seconds, leaving the woman devastated and contemplating suicide.
The accused, Shabaaz Ali, a local resident and owner of five meat shops, allegedly harassed his wife for not bearing children and over minor domestic disagreements, including requests to maintain cleanliness at his shops. The victim’s father claimed Ali harbored resentment after being asked to shut down an illegal slaughterhouse business. Reports indicate that Ali had married another woman a year ago and had issued talaq to her as well.
Tanzia, the victim, stated that Ali pronounced talaq over the phone in August and has not contacted her since. “Everything was normal before he left for 21 days. On his return, he denied ever giving talaq. I am seeking justice in court because triple talaq is illegal, and yet he ended our marriage in this manner,” she said.
Her father, Mujahid Ahmed, added, “Ali and his family have wronged my daughter. He has divorced two other women before, and now he has targeted my daughter. I had asked him to close the illegal slaughterhouse, and this seems to be revenge. We are ready to fight for justice in court.”
The victim’s family has approached the police, and authorities are investigating the matter. The incident has drawn widespread outrage, with calls for strict action against Ali. Reports also suggest that Ali allegedly sought validation from Islamic leaders, and confrontations occurred between his supporters and the victim’s family.
