NEW DELHI
Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Saba Karim believes Shreyas Iyer must immediately establish his own definitive identity as India’s T20I captain. According to sharp analytical remarks, Karim highlighted that the exceptional tactical acumen Iyer regularly displays in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has yet to properly reflect at the international level.
Karim’s critical observations followed India’s crushing nine-wicket defeat against England in the fourth T20I match in Bristol. This latest loss handed the host nation an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match bilateral series. Markedly, this outcome represents India’s second consecutive T20I series defeat since lifting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, putting the newly appointed leadership group under intense national scrutiny.
“I feel the time has come for Shreyas Iyer to truly assert himself as a captain,” Karim stated during an exclusive sports interview. The former national selector openly questioned several on-field decisions, particularly India’s confusing batting order adjustments during the Bristol match. He noted that sending Shivam Dube to bat at number five instead of the logically expected Tilak Varma did not align with the sharp decision-making typically associated with Iyer’s successful IPL tenures. Karim also emphasized that clear, active communication from the captain to their batting partner during high-pressure phases remains absolutely critical.
Despite criticizing Iyer’s tactical approach, Karim noted that the skipper’s individual batting form offers a major positive for the transition phase. Iyer played a spectacular lone-warrior knock of 80 runs off 49 deliveries. However, he lacked any meaningful support as India posted a modest total of 158 runs, which England effortlessly chased down in just 13.5 overs.
Karim further criticized India’s rigid batting strategy against England’s pace attack, stating that the visitors failed to read the opposition’s bowling plans or assess the larger English boundary dimensions accurately. He concluded that while Iyer’s strong batting will naturally boost his confidence, the time has officially come for him to command the dressing room and create a distinct international identity before the final T20I match on Saturday.
