Ndoye capitalizes on error to defeat Algeria

Switzerland cruised into the World Cup knockout stage after defeating Algeria 2-0, forcing Riyad Mahrez into retirement.

VANCOUVER

Switzerland cruised into the World Cup knockout stage with a dominant 2-0 victory over Algeria. This historic win marks the first time the Swiss team has progressed past the opening knockout round since 1938. They will now face either Colombia or Ghana right back here in Vancouver in their next match.

The Swiss team executed a perfect tactical plan created by Coach Murat Yakin. They struck early in the tenth minute when 20-year-old Johan Manzambi sprinted down the left wing and passed to Breel Embolo, who easily tapped the ball into the net. This early goal allowed Switzerland to change their formation, control the field, and completely choke Algeria’s attacking play.

The Swiss doubled their lead immediately after halftime. Following a poor defensive clearance by Algeria, winger Dan Ndoye quickly grabbed the loose ball and smoothly guided his shot past goalkeeper Luca Zidane. Algeria tried to fight back, but Captain Riyad Mahrez missed a crucial chance by firing his shot straight into a defender.

With star player Granit Xhaka leading the defense, Switzerland easily kept control for the rest of the match. For Algeria, the defeat brought an extra wave of sadness. After the final whistle, their 35-year-old captain, Mahrez, emotionally announced his official retirement from international football. He stated that individual mistakes cost his team dearly, making this match his final appearance for the national squad.
