Former G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant on Wednesday said India and the United States have the potential to build a resilient, balanced, and transformative partnership. His remarks came shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed US President Donald Trump’s announcement of resuming trade talks between the two nations.
Kant, writing on social media platform X, stressed that the way forward lies in “creating frameworks that are forward-looking and beneficial to both nations.” He praised Modi’s efforts since 2014 to strengthen ties with Washington, noting that cooperation between the two countries could greatly contribute to global stability and growth.
Trump, posting on Truth Social, confirmed that discussions aimed at resolving trade barriers would restart. He also described Modi as a “very good friend” and said he looked forward to speaking with him soon, expressing confidence in a successful outcome for both countries.
In his response, PM Modi highlighted the “limitless potential of the India-US partnership,” adding that the renewed dialogue would further deepen bilateral cooperation.
Tensions between the two countries had risen after Trump imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods. The US had raised duties to 25 per cent from August 7, followed by an additional levy taking the total tariff to 50 per cent from August 27. The higher costs affected exports such as shrimps, organic chemicals, carpets, and apparel in the American market.
With trade talks resuming, experts believe both sides now have an opportunity to resolve disputes and strengthen economic ties. The renewed engagement may open pathways for broader cooperation beyond trade, rooted in shared democratic values and strategic interests.
