INTRO: ‘Guru’s teachings promote harmony, discipline, and a sense of unity among all beings’

New Delhi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid homage to Adi Shankaracharya on his Jayanti, highlighting the enduring relevance of his teachings on Advaita Vedanta and their profound influence on spiritual thought and human values.
Taking to the social media platform X, Narendra Modi remembered Adi Shankaracharya as one of India’s greatest spiritual luminaries whose philosophy continues to guide millions across the world. He emphasized that the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta, which teaches the oneness of existence, remains deeply relevant in today’s world. The Prime Minister noted that Shankaracharya’s teachings promote harmony, discipline, and a sense of unity among all beings.

Modi also highlighted the philosopher’s efforts in revitalising spiritual thought across India, stating that his work continues to inspire people to follow the path of truth, compassion, and collective well-being. He added that Adi Shankaracharya’s wisdom serves as a guiding light for humanity even in modern times.

Adi Shankaracharya, widely regarded as a towering figure in Indian philosophy, played a pivotal role in consolidating the principles of Advaita Vedanta within Hindu thought. Born in Kalady, he renounced worldly life at a young age and became a sanyasi. He is believed to have attained spiritual enlightenment early in his life.

He authored influential commentaries on key Hindu scriptures such as the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Brahma Sutras, which continue to be studied and revered by scholars and practitioners alike. His work laid the foundation for a unified philosophical framework that emphasizes the unity of the individual soul with universal consciousness.

Adi Shankaracharya also established four major monastic centres across India to promote spiritual learning and preserve tradition. These include centres in Sringeri in the south, Dwarka in the west, Puri in the east, and Jyotirmath in the north.

Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also paid tribute to the revered spiritual leader, acknowledging his immense contributions to Indian philosophy and culture.
