Fuel strike paralyzes 8 districts in Bangladesh

Blurb: A massive fuel strike in northern Bangladesh, triggered by worker arrests, threatens regional stability amid global supply tensions and government crackdowns on illegal oil hoarding.

A massive fuel crisis is gripping northern Bangladesh as tanker workers launched an indefinite strike, leaving millions of people worried about market stability.

The protest began across eight districts, including Rangpur and Dinajpur, after three workers were arrested for alleged fuel theft. In response, union leaders have halted all operations at a major oil depot, stopping the flow of diesel and petrol to the region.

The strike is already threatening to bring buses and trucks to a standstill. Union leaders are demanding the immediate release of their colleagues, warning that they will not return to work until their terms are met. This tension comes at a difficult time, as global fuel supplies are already tight due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The war has made importing oil harder and more expensive for the entire nation.

To fight back against hoarding and smuggling, the government has taken bold steps. They are now offering cash rewards of up to 1 lakh Taka for citizens who report illegal oil stockpiling. Meanwhile, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been deployed to guard oil depots and filling stations to ensure that what little fuel is left doesn’t vanish into the black market.

Local officials say these “unscrupulous actors” are making a bad situation worse. While the government tries to negotiate with the strikers, the shadow of the West Asia war looms large, making every drop of oil precious. For now, residents in the north can only wait and hope for a quick resolution.
