SLUG: Massive milestone

NEW DELHI

India’s health insurance sector has reached a massive milestone, with total premiums crossing Rs 1.2 lakh crore in the latest financial year. Growing by 9%, the industry is seeing a surge in demand as more people seek financial safety against rising medical costs.

According to the Ministry of Finance, this growth is driven by better awareness and improved insurance products that offer wider coverage. To make the process smoother for patients, the insurance regulator (IRDAI) has introduced strict new rules for hospitals and insurers. Now, “cashless” treatment requests must be pre-approved within one hour, and final discharge papers should be cleared within three hours. These changes are designed to stop patients from waiting in hospital lobbies for hours after being recovered.

The report also shows that insurance companies are getting better at paying out. Claim settlements reached a high of 87.5% this year, and most customer complaints are being resolved quickly. While premiums have gone up slightly due to an aging population and more expensive hospital treatments, new 2024 rules ensure that prices stay fair and are based on real data.

Experts note that while the system is improving, some claims still get rejected because of “fine print” or policy limits. They suggest that as long as customers read their documents carefully and insurers communicate clearly, trust in the system will continue to grow, making health security a reality for millions more Indians.
