India finally becomes a power surplus nation

NEW DELHI
India has officially reached a major milestone in its journey toward modern development. The government informed Parliament that the country is now power-sufficient, boasting a massive electricity generation capacity of 524 GW as of February 2026.

This achievement marks a historic shift from the frequent power shortages that plagued the nation in previous decades.
Minister of State for Power, Shripad Naik, highlighted that India has added over 296 GW of new capacity since 2014. This rapid growth has allowed the electricity supply to finally keep pace with the rising national demand. While some areas still experience occasional outages, the Minister clarified that these are usually due to local technical issues in state distribution networks rather than a lack of actual power.
To reach this goal, the Central Government launched several major projects aimed at lighting up both rural villages and crowded cities. Programs like “Saubhagya” and the “Gram Jyoti Yojana” have been instrumental in building the wires and stations needed to bring electricity to the furthest corners of the country.
The future looks even brighter. According to the National Electricity Plan, India aims to increase its capacity to 874 GW by the year 2032. States are now being asked to plan ahead to ensure they stay one step ahead of growing energy needs. This progress ensures a more reliable life for households and a stronger backbone for industries, fueling India’s economic growth for years to come.
