Rashmi Shukla has returned as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra. On Tuesday, after assuming her post, she attended a ceremony to pay tribute to the martyrs of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, alongside Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar.

Shukla, an IPS officer from the 1998 batch, was removed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on November 4, 2023, during the state assembly elections. The ECI’s decision came after requests from Congress and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) to ensure a fair election process. They claimed Shukla’s association with the BJP raised concerns about transparency. Following her removal, Sanjiv Kumar Verma, an IPS officer from the 1990 batch, was appointed as the new DGP.

The Maharashtra government had initially appointed Shukla as DGP in January this year, with her term set to run until January 2026, though she was scheduled to retire in June. Despite opposition demands, including from Congress and Shiv Sena, Shukla was reinstated after the election process. The state home department sought Chief Minister Shinde’s approval, and after his consent, Shukla took charge once again.
