New Delhi
Opposition leaders on Tuesday called for a two-day debate on the Constitution in both Houses of Parliament, citing recent developments in the country. Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, and Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, have written to the respective Chairs requesting the discussion. Kharge emphasized that the debate should focus on both the positive aspects of the Constitution and the current challenges facing the nation. He added that they are awaiting the government’s response.
Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh questioned if the core values of the Constitution, such as justice, liberty, and fraternity, are being upheld. He also criticized the government’s slogan of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikaas and urged the Prime Minister to practice what he preaches. Singh raised concerns about incidents like the Sambhal violence, where religious tensions were sparked during a court-ordered survey, warning that growing disharmony poses a threat to national unity.
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi pointed out that debates on the Constitution have taken place in the past on significant anniversaries, such as Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary. He stressed that the proposed two-day discussion would allow MPs to show their commitment to the Constitution and send a positive message to the country. Congress MPs have also met Speaker Om Birla to push for the debate.
