India surged to the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) points table following their dominant 295-run win over Australia in the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Monday. This victory comes after a disappointing 0-3 loss to New Zealand, which had pushed India down to second place.

With this commanding win, India now leads the WTC standings with 61.11 percentage points, overtaking Australia, who are in second place with 57.69 percentage points. The triumph strengthens India’s chances of reaching their third consecutive WTC final at Lord’s next year.

Australia, despite the loss, remains in contention to defend their title. To secure a place in the final, they will need to win four of their remaining six Tests, which include a two-Test series in Sri Lanka following their home series against India.

The upcoming Tests will be crucial for both teams, with India needing to win at least three of their remaining four matches against Australia to guarantee direct qualification for the final. The next Test is a day-night match in Adelaide on December 6, followed by games in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.

Other teams like Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and South Africa are also in the race, with Sri Lanka currently in third place (55.56 percentage points), followed by New Zealand (54.55%) and South Africa (54.17%).
